The Butterfly Farm

This was the first commercial butterfly farm in Latin America. It started in 1984 for production of butterfly chrysalis strokes for the growing industry of butterfly exhibitions. Experience the all age popular butterfly exhibitions, big enclosures of greenhouses with reconstructed tropical forests and the hundreds and even thousands of flying butterflies inside them. Due to the uniqueness and fascination that this farm has had, Costa Ricans felt the need to open it to the general public. As a result, a garden of trails known as The Butterfly Farm was opened in 1990.
Visitors to this farm enjoy a guided two hour tour where they learn about the anatomy and physiology of the butterfly in different stages, its predators, its defense system, its connection to host plant, the defense mechanisms of the lodging plant, and other aspects about how the farm operates. Being the first to exhibit butterflies in Latin America, the Butterfly Farm has become a significant attraction for both Costa Ricans and foreigners.

Tour 4 in 1. The Best of Costa Rica

On this trip, one gets to see the monument of “the farmer” and the Juan Santamaría International Airport and through the city of Alajuela, which is the second most populated city of Costa Rica. In Alajuela, there are the Mangos Park and the former jail of the city, which became a museum and a technical school.
Further north, one starts seeing the contrast between the architecture of city houses and the beautiful country houses. These houses are surrounded by strawberry, vegetable, exportation flower farms and coffee plantations. A delicious tropical breakfast with cup of authentic Costa Rican coffee will be served before approaching the national park. At this point, one notices a change in the climate. Vegetation enjoys the cloudy forest of the Poas Volcano. Its diameter makes it one of the widest volcanoes in the world. There will also be a walk through the trails that goes to Botos Lagoon (an extinct crater). This lagoon has lots of ecosystems where one can see many species of flora and fauna in this cloudy forest. Outside the park, there are some dairy farms where many exportation products to Latin America are produced.
Towards the Caribbean, there will be a stop at La Paz Waterfall Gardens. This is a natural park where one will have the opportunity to walk through spectacular trails, which lead to the Magia Blanca Waterfall. This is the biggest and most spectacular waterfall of the area. There will also be the opportunity to visit one of the world biggest butterfly observatories, which has a fascinating collection of tropical species. After a delicious lunch, the tour heads to Sarapiquí. On the way to Sarapiquí, the beautiful La Paz Waterfall can be seen. There is also another cascade that is surrounded by primary forests. This area becomes a must for photography lovers. Here one starts noticing particular characteristics of the Atlantic Area. There are beautiful towns surrounded by pineapple plantations, yuca, coconut and palm trees. These tropical plants embellish the colorful landscape. In Puerto Viejo, one takes a boat trip through the Sarapiquí River. One enjoys the tropical forest around it: monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles, and variety of birds. Canopy Tour San Lorenzo

Canopy touring is one of the most recent adventure alternatives for national or international tourists. One of the closest canopy tour options takes place only 45 minutes from San Jose on the skirts of the Barva Volcano in San Jose de La Montana. There is also San Lorenzo Canopy in San Ramon of Alajuela only one and a half-hour from San Jose.
New facilities offer the tourist the opportunity to enjoy this popular sport without even having to leave the Central Valley or having to sleep outside San Jose. This interesting trip consists of nine platforms located in gigantic oak trees at an altitude of 15 to 35 meters connected by steel cables. There is a staircase that takes the participant to the first platform. Once all of the safety instructions are carefully checked, the tour begins. The distances covered between platforms are from 20 to 95 meters.
There is also a side trip, which consists of a walk through mountain trails surrounded by gigantic trees, mosses, ferns and exotic orchids. Rain Forest Arenal Tram

This Cable railway is located in a private reserve of 475 hectares bordering with the Braulio Carrillo National Park 50 minutes from San Jose. There will be a visit and workshop about the use of canopy and the construction of the gondola.
The tour is divided in groups for a walk of the trails of the National Park. A naturalist guide will explain the importance of the rain forest.
The total extension of the adventure covers 2600 meters, which takes around 90 minutes. The gondolas can carry 6 people including the guide. After the gondola adventure, one goes to the restaurant for a delicious lunch.
